What a weekend for two girls from Scarborough !

“Dala arrived at the 50th Anniversary of the Newport Folk Festival as complete unknowns. They were given an early morning slot on Sunday, performing on the smallest of the three stages, the Waterside stage. As their hour-long set progressed, the crowd got bigger and bigger as word spread through the festival site that something historic was happening. By the time their second standing ovation was over, Dala had become the “find” of the festival.

The buzz continued all afternoon, until Newport’s legendary Artistic Director Bob Jones asked them to play a one song “tweener” on the main stage, in between Neko Case and Arlo Guthrie (the only tweener of the weekend, and possibly a Newport first). Performing “Levi Blues” around one microphone of à la Dylan and Baez, Amanda and Sheila wowed a capacity crowd of close to 10,000. As Dala walked offstage, Quint Davis, the producer/director of the New Orleans Jazz Festival summed it up perfectly:

“It takes most artists a lifetime
to get from the Waterside stage to the main stage;
Dala did it in three hours.”
